Celebrities talk about your mental health struggles are valid

World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10. While artificial intelligence may have advanced, there is still a stigma associated with mental health that prevents many people from discussing or even admitting they may have an issue.

However, it is always encouraging to see folks in positions of power gather the confidence to normalize such conversations. And over time, more and more famous people from Pakistan have expressed their own issues with mental health or made an effort to raise awareness of the issue. So, in honor of World Mental Health Day, here is a list of famous people—from Zara Noor Abbas to Hania Aamir—who have often reminded us that while we may occasionally have to battle our demons alone, we are not fighting them alone.

Zara Noor Abbas

In a podcast interview with Frieha Altaf in September, Zara discussed her history of battling with depression and argued for the need for more compassion on the side of medical experts. The 31-year-old star also talked about how she requested anxiety medications to help her sleep through the night but was turned down. The actor’s main topics of discussion were the “traumatic” effects of stillbirth, the negligence of the hospital system, and society’s lack of support for women who recover from such a serious loss.

spoke about how the lockdown had caused her to experience significant anxiety in June 2020. She recalled initially pushing it off since she thought it was stress from her job. But when she was alone, she realized she needed to get checked out. She was given the diagnosis of borderline clinical depression at that point, and the doctors advised both medication and counseling.

Yashma Gill

Prior to Zara, the actor Yashma Gill had also disclosed her battle with depression in an effort to spread awareness of the issue. I’ve talked about this before, talking about it again, and I’ll keep talking about it until it doesn’t become normal, Gill wrote in a lengthy message posted to her Instagram. I can’t emphasize enough how crucial it is to reach out and get treatment because I have personal experience with depression, panic attacks, and extremely high levels of anxiety.

She went on to reiterate the need for people to cease conflating depression with sadness. “Depression is a very distinct emotional condition from sadness, and it’s much harder to deal with. It can take a toll on your logical thinking, leaving you feeling hopeless, and it’s dark, hollow, emotionally crippling, and depressing,” she said.

Mawra Hocane

Mawra stated she experienced social anxiety in September of this year. “I recently became anxious, and I’ve been working through it day by day. We are all in this together for everyone who is reading it and has suffered, she had said in response to a fan. We all have our days of weakness and breakdowns, but I’m lucky that my career allows me to express my emotions on television, she stated in January 2020, sharing a clip from her drama series Daasi. Since I was given an anxiety diagnosis more than a year ago, I no longer feel ashamed of it.It’s a part of me, just like the sky is blue, but as I get to know it and grow with it, the more prepared I am to cope with it. When I am experiencing a panic attack, I share with my friends and family because I believe I am stronger than my situation. I’m sharing this because I want everyone who battles anxiety on a daily basis to be at peace with it and not feel ashamed of it.

Hania Aamir

Hania Aamir discussed self-care in February of last year while once again highlighting the necessity to concentrate on one’s mental health. “Maintaining oneself is crucial. There is no shame in being open and asking for assistance when you need it. Spend some time getting to know yourself. Engage in pursuits that actually bring you joy. Take care of yourself, and you’ll eventually develop a lovely and upbeat perspective on the world.”

Momina Mustehsan

“Mental health is just as vital as physical health,” Momina Mustehsan wrote in 2018. “We all experience times in our lives when everything seems to be spiraling out of our control.” The Awaari singer had previously spoken about depression. She admitted that she had also had quite bad panic episodes. “I almost over my threshold, and I woke up with a violent panic attack. Yes, those do exist. And they suffocate and temporarily paralyze you. However, that moment endures just as long as you let it to. I always attempt to solve all of my issues on my own, but when I feel like I need assistance, I get in touch with those who are dear to me. Please be aware that asking for assistance is acceptable. You become human; it doesn’t make you weak.

Humaima Malick

After Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput passed away in June 2020, the Dekh Magar Pyaar Se star tweeted, “Mental health! Please take it seriously and assist those in need. Help those around you instead of interrogating them if you notice someone who isn’t feeling well. Just like our hearts, our thoughts may be harmed.

Imran Abbas

After model Anam Tanoli killed herself, the 35-year-old actor posted on Instagram, saying “Mental illness isn’t a joke.” Don’t treat those who are depressed, mentally ill, stressed out, or anxious with contempt.

He continued, “We must look around and attempt to be kind to people who are suffering from the situations which can lead a person to suicide. Especially when someone is deceased and can’t explain or clarify herself/himself (which certainly is one of the most forbidden acts in our religion) In current culture, it is very easy to mock anyone for any reason, including actresses and models. You cannot become a comedian by making jokes about suicide victims. It is laughable humor; it is not dark humor.
